Pakistani capital at a standstill as Khan supporters demonstrate

The Pakistani capital was sealed off on Saturday, invaded by security forces, with mobile internet cut off as supporters of jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan tried to take over the streets in protest.

Khan was barred from running in February's election, which was marred by allegations of fraud and sidelined by dozens of lawsuits.

But his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has defied the crackdown to urge the government to hold regular protests.

PTI activists began marching into Islamabad on Friday from Khan's power base in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but faced roadblocks of shipping containers and volleys of tear gas.

Islamabad is on high alert ahead of a series of high-level diplomatic events over the next two weeks, including the visit of Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

On Saturday, small, scattered convoys rushed to Islamabad, in defiance of the government which approved the deployment of troops on the streets citing the need to guarantee security ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit on 15 and October 16, which will be attended by delegations from countries such as China, India and Russia.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said authorities had intelligence that protesters were planning to disrupt the SCO conference in a bid to attract attention.
