Imran Khan's party vows to continue protest against govt

The law and order situation in the Pakistani capital remained tense for the second consecutive day on Sunday (October 6, 2024), as the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to continue its protest against the government despite the mysterious disappearance of protest leader Ali Amin Gandapur. .

In a late-night meeting, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party led by Mr. Khan decided that the protest would continue until party founder Mr. Khan asked his supporters to put an end to it.

The PTI political committee also decided that if Gandapur was shut down, senior party leader Azam Swati would lead the protest. If Mr. Swati is arrested, a new leader will be chosen to take command, according to the Dawn newspaper.

Mr. Khan has been incarcerated in Rawalpindis Adiala Prison for over a year. Following its rally call, the PTI is demanding the release of Mr. Khan, the independence of the judiciary and protesting against rising inflation.

The political committee also criticized the demise of protest leader Gandapur, who is the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The committee warned there would be serious repercussions if he was arrested.

Former Speaker of the National Assembly and senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser told Dawn newspaper that the PTI political committee had decided to continue the protest as long as it gets a clear directive from Mr Khan to stage it. END.

It was also decided that Azam Swati would lead the protest if Gandapur was arrested. However, he warned, the arrest of a sitting chief minister would be disastrous for the country and would lead to serious repercussions.

Earlier, to the embarrassment of the government, a large number of PTI protesters managed to reach Islamabad by overcoming multiple barriers.

The protesters managed to reach the capital even after Mr. Gandapur left them near the capital and headed towards the Chief Minister's house and went there in secret.

The fate of Gandapur was unknown. The party and members of his family were unable to communicate with him from Saturday evening, October 5, 2024, said his government spokesperson, Muhammad Ali Saif.

Mr Saif first claimed on Saturday (October 5, 2024) that Gandapur had been arrested, but later, in a post on X, said that the KP CM had not been officially arrested.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had earlier asserted that no one would be allowed to enter Islamabad, saying proper arrangements were in place to deal with the protesters.

Meanwhile, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly announced that it will convene its session on Sunday, October 5, 2024 afternoon to discuss the issue of his disappearance.

Furthermore, Mr. Naqvi announced that 564 protesters, including 11 plainclothes members of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police, had been arrested during the demonstrations. He said it was the first time police had been used in such protests. He also said that among those arrested were 120 Afghan nationals.

He also said that the PTI was planning to stage a sit-in until the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
