Imran Khan celebrates 72 years in prison as his supporters rally for his freedom. His birthday coincides with protests, highlighting his continued fight for 'real freedom'

Former Pakistan Prime Minister and cricket icon Imran Khan turned 72 on Saturday, his second birthday in prison as his party's supporters headed to Islamabad for a planned rally demanding his freedom and judicial independence.

On social media, his fans and political supporters used the hashtag #HappyBirthdayImranKhan to wish him on his birthday. They posted his old photos and videos from his sports days.

Khan served as prime minister from August 18, 2018 until April 9, 2022, when he was ousted after a no-confidence motion. He was arrested on August 5 last year in the Toshakhana corruption case. Several cases have been filed against him one after another, and he is found guilty in some of them.

He has been incarcerated in Adiala Prison, Rawalpindi, for over a year. Khan's birthday coincided with his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insafs party's protests planned at D Chowk in Islamabad and Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore where supporters of his call are heading.

The army was called in to thwart the protests. On Saturday, his post on X urged his supporters to go to D-Chowk in Islamabad to protest and those from Punjab to join in Lahore.

I am so proud of all our people. Thank you for keeping the faith. You showed unwavering resilience and courage in coming out yesterday and overcame incredible obstacles to continue moving towards D Chowk, he said and termed it a fight for Haqeeqi Azadi (the true freedom).

Although there were no expensive events in Pakistan, international cricket venues and groups paid tribute to his cricketing skills and joined the celebrations on X.
