Exit polls predict a huge defeat for the BJP against the Congress in Haryana, and a hung assembly in J&K with an advantage for the Congress-National Conference alliance.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Sunday termed the poll results for Jammu Kashmir and Haryana as a defeat for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Narendra Modi has won”the former Bihar chief minister said at the Patna airport, before boarding a flight to Delhi.

Exit poll results released on Saturday evening predicted a huge defeat for the BJP against the Congress in Haryana and a hung assembly in Jammu and Kashmir with an advantage for the Congress-National Conference alliance. However, it is certain that exit polls could also go wrong.

That said, if the projections were to hold true on counting day (October 8), both the Congress and India's grand old party-led opposition bloc would have continued the momentum from the Lok Sabha polls. In the general elections, held from April 19 to June 1, the opposition group won 234 seats, including 99 in Congress; the party almost doubled its total compared to what it won (52) in 2019.

The ruling party, the NDA, led by the BJP, obtained 293 seats, including 240 for the saffron party. However, the BJP fell short of what would have been its third consecutive individual majority.

Since then, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has repeatedly spoken about how the Indian bloc inflicted a psychological defeat on Prime Minister Modi.

It is also the first time in his career that the Prime Minister has led a coalition government. Previously, as Chief Minister of Gujarat and then Prime Minister of the country, he led governments with absolute majority.
