RJD president Lalu Prasad made a bold statement on Sunday, saying the Congress's expected victory in the Haryana assembly elections should be seen as a clear defeat for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to reporters before boarding his flight to Delhi, the former Bihar chief minister said: Ye paraajay hai Narendra Modi ka (this must be seen as a defeat of Narendra Modi).
As Lalu prepares to face a court hearing on Monday over the 'land for jobs' scam dating back to his tenure as railway minister in the previous UPA government, he was accompanied by members of his family , including his eldest daughter, Lok Sabha MP Misa Bharti. They are expected to join him in court as he faces allegations related to the scandal.
Bharti weighed in on the election debate, emphasizing that she sees the Congress's potential success as a victory for the INDIA bloc, of which the RJD is a crucial part. Haryana is going to have a people's government (janta ki sarkar), she said, expressing optimism about the results.
The BJP has been in power in Haryana for two consecutive terms, but several exit polls released on Saturday predict a decisive change. Most polls indicate that the Congress could regain power from the BJP in the 90-member Haryana Assembly. For example, Dainik Bhaskar's exit poll predicted that the Congress would get between 44 and 54 seats, while the BJP would win between 15 and 29 seats.
Other polls echoed this trend, with C-Voter-India Today predicting that the Congress would have 50-58 seats compared to 20-28 for the BJP. The Republic Bharat-Matrize poll went even further, predicting that the Congress could get 55 to 62 seats while the BJP could get between 18 and 24. Similarly, the Red Mike-Datansh poll suggested that the Congress would get 50 to 55 seats, while the BJP could get only 20-25.
Additionally, the Dhruv Research exit poll result positioned the Congress between 50 and 64 seats and the BJP between 22 and 32. The Peoples' Pulse exit poll also leaned in favor of the Congress, predicting 49 to 60 seats for him and 20 to 32 for the BJP. Notably, many exit polls predicted that the INLD would surpass the JJP in terms of number of seats.
With vote counting scheduled for Tuesday, all eyes are on Haryana to see if these predictions hold true and what it could mean for the political landscape in India.
