North Korea and China mark 75th anniversary of ties as outsiders question ties
SEOUL: The leaders of North Korea and China marked the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties on Sunday by exchanging messages expressing hope for stronger ties, as outsiders raised questions about their relationship.
The exchange of messages comes as North Korea and Russia have significantly expanded cooperation while China apparently keeps its distance. Experts believe the level of exchanges and commemorative programs between North Korea and China in the coming months will provide an indication of the exact state of their relations.
In a message sent to Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his government will constantly strive to consolidate and develop the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, according to the central news agency North Korean.
Xi, in his message to Kim, said China is ready to jointly promote stability and the pursuit of the socialist cause in the two countries,” KCNA said.
Since North Korea and China established diplomatic relations on October 6, 1949, their relationship has often been described as being as close as lips and teeth. China, North Korea's largest trading partner and main aid provider, has been suspected of avoiding fully implementing U.N. sanctions against North Korea and sending aid shipments clandestine to help its poor neighbor stay afloat and continue to serve as a bulwark against American influence on the Korean peninsula. .
But many observers say China is reluctant to form an anti-Western three-way alliance with North Korea and Russia because it prefers a stable regional security environment to address many economic challenges and maintain relations with the Europe and its Asian neighbors.
North Korea and Russia have grown significantly closer amid widespread external suspicions that North Korea supplied conventional weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine in exchange for military and economic assistance. At a meeting in Pyongyang in June, Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a pact stipulating mutual military assistance in the event of an attack on either country, in what was seen as the largest defense agreement between the two countries since the end of the Cold War.
North Korea is engaged in confrontations with the United States, South Korea and their partners over the advancement of its nuclear program. Kim said he had been forced to expand his nuclear and conventional capabilities to deal with U.S.-led security threats.
On Sunday, KCNA reported that Kim oversaw a live artillery firing exercise held by cadets at a military academy. After attending the exercise, Kim said training programs at the military academy should focus on guerrilla tactics to eliminate enemies through rapid mobile operations and by surprise, according to KCNA.
