The situation remained tense in the Pakistani capital on Sunday, as the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to continue its anti-government protests, a day after violent clashes between security forces and his supporters who left one dead and several other police officers injured.

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party, in an evening meeting, decided that the protest would continue until the release of Khan, who has been imprisoned since August last year.

The situation in Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi, which witnessed Saturday's violent clashes, remains tense. However, no violence was reported in the twin cities on Sunday, indicating that the situation is gradually improving.

Mobile phone services were also restored in the two towns that were suspended on Friday.

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who is also the leader of the protest, are unknown.

The party and his family members were unable to make any contact with him as of Saturday evening, government spokesman Muhammad Ali Saif said.

Saif first claimed on Saturday that Gandapur had been arrested, but later, in an article on X, said that the KP CM had not been officially arrested.

The PTI political committee decided that if Gandapur was shut down, senior party leader Azam Swati would lead the protest. If Swati is arrested, a new leader will be chosen to take command, according to the Dawn newspaper.

The political committee also criticized the demise of Gandapur. The committee warned there would be serious repercussions if he was arrested.

Former National Assembly Speaker and senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser told Dawn newspaper that the PTI political committee had decided to continue the protest as long as it gets a clear directive from Khan to end it.

It was also decided that Azam Swati would lead the protest if Gandapur was arrested.

However, he warned, the arrest of a sitting chief minister would be disastrous for the country and would lead to serious repercussions.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said Gandapur was not in police custody, adding to the mystery of his disappearance.

I confirm that he is not in the custody of the government or any other government institution, he said.

The minister said police were searching for Gandapur who was hiding in an unknown location.

The police also searched a few places but could not find him, he said, adding that he received photos of Gandapur escaping from the KP house before the police arrived and d other law enforcement agencies.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly said it would convene its session on Sunday to discuss the issue of his disappearance.

Naqvi also announced that 564 protesters, including 11 plainclothes members of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police, were arrested during the protests.

He said it was the first time police had been used in such protests. He also said that among those arrested were 120 Afghan nationals.

Naqvi said he had ordered a high-level investigation into how a provincial police force was involved in the protests and attacked. [other] police officers.

He said 31 policemen from Islamabad and 75 policemen from Punjab were injured in Saturday's clashes.

In Lahore, around 30 supporters of Khan's party, including lawyers, were arrested after they managed to reach the historic Minar-e-Pakistan premises to demand the release of their leader, police said on Sunday.

More than 200 PTI workers, including Khan, have been charged with terrorism, they added.

Earlier, to the embarrassment of the government, a large number of PTI protesters managed to reach Islamabad by overcoming multiple barriers.

Naqvi claimed that the PTI was planning to stage a sit-in until the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
