Boris Johnson suggests explosion of irrationality within the Conservative Party after his departure
The former prime minister said his party miscalculated when he was forced out as leader in July 2022 following a series of ministerial resignations.
Mr Johnson has undertaken a series of interviews to mark the publication of his book Unleashed, which comes out next week.
Speaking to GB News in an interview broadcast on Sunday, Mr Johnson was asked why he was no longer in Number 10, given his party was now in opposition despite an 80-vote majority in 2019.
I think the answer to that, unfortunately, is that there has been an explosion of irrationality in my party, and I think they miscalculated, he said.
Highlighting the things he achieved in office, including the vaccine rollout, Mr Johnson added: If you ask me, if you really push me to say it, was it a terrible mistake to deport me? Yes, I think it was and I think it was a blunder.
Mr Johnson announced he was stepping down as Prime Minister and Conservative leader following the party and Chris Pincher scandals.
His announcement follows a series of mass ministerial resignations, including that of current Conservative leader Rishi Sunak, over a period of several days as the parliamentary party's support waned.
In the book, due to be published on Thursday, Mr Johnson retracted his apology for the partygate scandal which contributed to his political downfall.
He wrote that he had erred in making pathetic and groveling statements about lockdown-era rallies in Downing Street, which sparked public outcry and dealt a major blow to his premiership.
Asked about his change in tone in an interview with ITV News on Friday, Mr Johnson said: What I was trying to say was that I think the general apology, the kind of apology that I made from the beginning, I think the problem was that afterwards all the accusations which then fell on the civil servants who had worked very hard at number 10 and elsewhere were accepted as true.
He added: You can't say that I haven't been exposed, over the last few years, to all the anger and outrage that people have.
