Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un pledge to 'deepen friendly cooperation'
Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged this Sunday “deepen friendly cooperation” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Unduring an exchange of messages to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Xi stressed his intention to strengthen strategic communication and promote regional peace, while Kim reaffirmed his desire to consolidate relations between the two countries. Analysts say Pyongyang continues to depend on Beijing to avoid international sanctions and support its economy.
Xi says both succeed “they supported each other in the consolidation of popular power and the safeguarding of national sovereignty”according to a press release published by the public channel CCTV.
The Chinese president said that Beijing and Pyongyang “promoted socialist construction” and who “collaborated closely in the promotion of regional peace and stability” and in the cause of “maintaining international justice and equity.”
Xi added that the anniversary is “an opportunity to strengthen strategic communication and coordination and deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation.”
For his part, Kim said the two countries “overcame all kinds of hardships and challenges and courageously advanced on the path of socialism,” according to CCTV.

The exchange of messages comes at a time when relations between the two neighbors appear to have cooled, coinciding with the strong rapprochement between North Korea and Russia.
The two countries are celebrating the “Year of North Korea-China Friendship” on the aforementioned 75th anniversary, but exchanges between the two in 2024 have been strangely limited.
China, however, remains North Korea's main strategic and commercial partner, a country with which it shares a border of more than 1,400 kilometers.
