Netanyahu's new Middle East vision excludes Palestine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently used the term “New Middle East” in his speeches. Israeli officials have been seen displaying maps of Israel at various international forums, notably excluding any mention of a Palestinian state or territory on these maps.

During his speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu presented two maps of Israel.

The first map highlighted in green countries that are part of peace agreements with Israel or seeking to maintain relations with it, including Egypt, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the Jordan.

The second map depicted Iran and its allied countries in the Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon region in black, labeling them as malicious regions.

Erdoan condemns new Israeli vision in the Middle East

In a recent speech, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan condemned Israel's ambitions, warning that Israel dreams of seizing the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and showing it on its maps because it refuses to accept Gaza.

Professor Yezid Sayigh, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center, disagrees that Netanyahu's ambitions reflect his government's true goals. Sayigh argues that Netanyahu's idea of a new Middle East aims to transform Palestinian territories into Israeli colonies.

Israel continues to press ahead with its settlement expansion plans, particularly in the West Bank, despite international and Arab criticism, with announcements of further settlement increases.

David Schenker, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, points out that several ministers in Israel's right-wing government do not believe in a two-state solution.

He says the possibility of a Palestinian state is more remote today than it has been since the 1993 Oslo Accords. However, Schenker doubts the United States will approve Israeli maps that omit the territories Palestinians.

Schenker, who previously served as assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, adds that Israel's vision for the new Middle East involves a region free of Iranian threats.

Mary Eizenkott, an Israeli security expert and retired intelligence officer, contradicted this view in a BBC interview, saying Israel was not seeking to impose a new Middle East. However, Israel aims to ensure that the intransigent Iranian regime does not influence the region's geopolitical dynamics.

On the other hand, Professor Sayigh suggests that Netanyahu's rhetoric aims to eliminate Iran's nuclear program while restoring Israel's global standing, which was damaged after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, leading to an embarrassment international for Israel.

The assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah in a major Israeli strike in southern Beirut is seen as an important turning point, both politically and geographically, in the ongoing conflict.

It is also worth noting that on October 1, Iran launched several ballistic missiles at Israel, claiming that this attack was in retaliation for the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh on Iranian soil. Israel, in response, pledged to retaliate at a time and place of its choosing.
