Johnson says Starmer's donations look greedy as he defends his PPE case

The former Conservative prime minister criticized his Labor successor's decision to accept gifts of clothes and glasses because Sir Keir must be worth a dime or two because of his legal career.

Mr Johnson, himself no stranger to questions about donations, defended his government's decision to award contracts for personal protective equipment (PPE) to inexperienced suppliers during the pandemic, some of whom maintained close ties with ministers.

Speaking to LBC on Tuesday morning, former MP Mr Johnson said: I want you to know that no donor is paying for my suits. Or glasses. Who pays for your glasses? You pay for your glasses, right? It's incredible.

I mean, the guy (Sir Keir), he's a man in silk, right? I mean, he's got to be worth a shot or two. Why did he ask a guy to pay for his glasses?

Mr Johnson, who is promoting his memoir Unleashed, questioned why Sir Keir accepted lavish gifts from his Labor peer and donor Lord Alli when he received a very good government salary anyway .

He added: You know, that sounds greedy, right? But if you then give the guy a pass at number 10, it looks corrupt. And so I just don't understand. I don't know why he still wears those glasses.

Elsewhere, Mr Johnson was asked if he would apologize for launching unnecessary and dodgy PPE-related Covid contracts during the pandemic.

In recent months, campaign group Transparency International UK has warned of more than 130 such contracts, saying some of them risk corruption because they were awarded to inexperienced firms with close ties to the Conservatives. .

The BBC has meanwhile reported that PPE worth an estimated 1.4 billion, acquired by the government in a single transaction during the pandemic, had been destroyed or written off.

Mr Johnson told LBC he remembered our absolute desperation to get PPE into the UK.

He later apologized for the questionable nature of some contracts, telling LBC: “They did it and I'm sorry for that but, you know, frankly, we needed these things as quickly as possible.”

And I think most people really understand that. Our country was desperately short of protective equipment.

And, you know, I'm defending the government trying to get this done as quickly as possible. And all sorts of crazy people were recommended to us for PPE, but we just had to act as quickly as possible.

Alongside questions over Covid contracts, Mr Johnson's tenure has been marked by accusations of sleaze over the donations he received.

These included questions he faced over gold wallpaper when Lord Brownlow, a Tory donor, financed the renovation of the Downing Street flat in which the then Prime Minister lived.

The Electoral Commission fined the Conservative Party €17,800 for failing to scrupulously comply with the law in declaring the donation.

Mr Johnson was also investigated over who paid for a luxury holiday he took with his then-fiancee (now wife), Carrie Symonds, in 2019.

David Ross, owner of Carphone Warehouse, invited them to his villa on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

The Commons Standards Committee criticized Mr Johnson because he took too long to provide a proper explanation about the holiday.
