Trump insults Detroit while campaigning in the city

DETROIT — Former President Donald Trump criticized Detroit during his speech to an economic panel Thursday, saying the entire country would end up like the city if his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, was elected.

Trump's remarks came as he addressed the Detroit Economic Club in a speech appealing to the auto industry, a key segment of the population in battleground Michigan's largest city. But he made contradictory remarks about Detroit throughout his speech, saying it was a developing city, which was apparently a compliment.

Democrats in the state were quick to criticize Trump for his comments. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan praised the city's recent drop in crime and population growth.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has been a major Democratic presidential contender, also criticized Trump, saying on X: “And you better believe the people of Detroit won't forget this come November.”

Harris, speaking to reporters in Las Vegas, hailed his current situation as a great city, then added: “In contrast, my opponent, Donald Trump, once again trashed another great American city when he was in Detroit, which is just an additional element. evidence on a very long list of reasons why he is unfit to be president of the United States.

Wayne County, home to Detroit, has not been kind to Trump in past elections. In 2016 and 2020, Trump received about 30% of the vote in Wayne, losing the county by huge margins.

Trump's campaign said in a statement after his appearance that Detroit had suffered from globalist policies championed by Kamala Harris, which led to the relocation of manufacturing overseas.

“As President Trump outlined in his speech, his policies will usher in a new era of economic success and stability for Detroit, helping the city reach its full potential,” said Communications Director Victoria LaCivita of Trump in Michigan.

Trump's comments come as many in the city believe Detroit has gone from being a national joke to becoming a national attraction. Nearly a decade after emerging from embarrassing bankruptcy, the Motor City has stabilized its finances, improved city services, stemmed population losses that have seen more than a million people leave since the 1950s, and made progress in cleaning up its 139 square miles.

Detroit is now a destination for conventions and meetings. In April, Detroit set an attendance record for the NFL Draft when more than 775,000 fans flocked to the city's downtown for the three-day event. And just hours after Trump's remarks, thousands were expected in the same neighborhood as the city's baseball team, the Tigers, aimed to win its AL Division series.

Some attendees at the event understood Trump's comment to Detroit to be a reference to the city's past financial struggles.
