ABOUT THE BOOK
“China is entering an era of political uncertainty and the rest of the world may have to pay the price for Xi’s China’s exaggerated dreams of power and grandeur.”
The Belt and Road Initiative, first unveiled by Xi Jinping in 2013, was seen as even bigger and grander than the US Marshall Plan. Known as the “New Silk Road”, it proposed a land-based “Silk Road Economic Belt” linking China to Europe via Central Asia and the “Maritime Silk Road” whose Chinese claimed that it existed in ancient times across the Indian Ocean. The BRI would not only restore China's glory as a global trading nation, but also establish its status as a global leader, surpassing the United States.
A decade later, not everyone in Asia and the Pacific shares Xi's vision of a China-dominated future. Countries like Sri Lanka and Laos fell into the Chinese debt trap due to the loans they took under the BRI; in others, such as Thailand and the Central Asian republics, Chinese investment is not welcome; and in some countries, such as Pakistan, opposition to Chinese incursions has been downright violent.
In The End of the Chinese Century?, journalist Bertil Lintner takes us through the history of the BRI and China's global expansionist projects. He casts an expert eye on the future of this once-vaunted project and what its failure could mean for the “Chinese Century” – and how it would affect India, which continues to be a counterpoint to the China on the world stage.
Bertil Lintner says: “In 2013, Xi Jinping launched his Belt and Road Initiative, intended to be even bigger than the US Marshall Plan, which helped Europe rebuild after World War II. A just world order. Xi also wanted to restore China to greatness and turn the country into an engine of economic growth and a global political and military force, one that would eventually overtake the United States as the world's most powerful nation. Each of these major projects came to fruition. In this book, I endeavor to examine what went wrong – and what Xi is likely to do to salvage what remains of his dream of making China great again.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
