In speech, Trump paints a violent picture of immigration in Colorado and says he will call his mass deportation efforts “Operation Aurora”
Updated on Friday October 11, 2024 at 3:56 p.m.
Former President Donald Trump speaks to an audience of thousands of supporters at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center on the outskirts of Aurora this afternoon.
City leaders, community members and law enforcement painted a more nuanced picture of the situation. A dozen people suspected of having links to the Tren de Aragua gang have been arrested for various crimes in the metropolitan area.
But the city's Republican mayor complains the situation has been blown out of proportion for political purposes, and residents say the attention has led to racist threats and intimidation against them.
Watch Trump speak at the rally below:
In his remarks, Trump said, “I love this state. This state must become Republican, to loud cheers.
He said he could spend time on the most beautiful beaches in the world, but instead he came to Colorado to find out what happened to Aurora.
He blasted Gov. Jared Polis, calling him a coward, a fraud and pathetic. He also blamed Vice President Kamala Harris for the increase in the number of new immigrants arriving in the country over the past two years.
Kamala imported an army of illegal alien gang members and migrant criminals from Third World dungeons, Trump said. And she beautifully reinstalled them in your community to prey on innocent American citizens, which is what they do. And nowhere is that more evident than here.
Researchers have repeatedly found that immigrants, whether documented or not, do not commit crimes at higher rates. City officials have repeatedly denied that the gang controls any building or part of the city, as have many residents of the affected buildings.
Of the tens of thousands of new immigrants arriving through Colorado over the past two years, local law enforcement says they have arrested about a dozen suspected of having gang ties.
Trump announced that if re-elected, he would target migrants for mass arrests and deportations and call the effort Operation Aurora. He said he would rely on the Alien and Sedition Act for his legal authority. The 1798 law gives the president broad powers to detain and expel foreign nationals from countries deemed to have invaded the United States.
At the end of his speech, he also said: “I hereby call for the death penalty for any migrant who kills an American citizen. The queue received some of the loudest cheers of the gathering.

Trump interrupted his remarks to play television clips that included Fox News segments on migrant crime.
They broke into an apartment building and held tenants at gunpoint and knifepoint, Trump said. He also spoke more broadly about migrants around the world.
Our criminals are like babies compared to these people. These criminals are the most violent people in the world.
Cindy Romero, the woman who posted the viral video that sparked all the controversy in Aurora, briefly joined Trump on stage. Trump called her brave and applauded her for releasing the video.
Democratic officials defend Aurora: Trump doesn't seem to care who he hurts
Democrats offered their own advance rebuttal to Trump's visit and message about Aurora in the city, speaking Friday morning several miles closer to the apartments than the former president at Stanley Marketplace.
Senator Michael Bennet was blunt in his assessment of the visit. Donald Trump came to Aurora to do what he does best, which is demonize immigrants, lie and serve his own political goals.
Democratic Rep. Jason Crow, an Army veteran who lives in and represents Aurora, stood up for his community. We know in Aurora that our vibrancy, our strength, our culture, and much of who we are, are drawn from this magnificent immigrant heritage.
Crow also wanted to set the record straight. He said he has spoken with local law enforcement and there is no increase in transnational gang activity in that area.
What is happening is small and isolated and, to be clear, never acceptable, Crow said. But it's not a push, it's not a change. There is no takeover of any part of this city, of any apartment complex. This did not happen. It's a lie.
Gov. Jared Polis acknowledged there are crime victims in Aurora, but noted that statistics show the city has become safer over the past two years. He also noted that the city's mayor, Republican Mike Coffman, denounced the former president's lies and distortions about Aurora.
It just shows, in terms of character, that very often when he speaks, former President Trump doesn't seem to care who he hurts with his words and his rhetoric or the consequences of what he says, added Polis.
Crow added that Trump is using Aurora because they see an opportunity to try to lie and misrepresent the situation.
Crow hosted a roundtable discussion with recent immigrants the day before the rally and said many told him they feared anti-immigrant sentiments would increase.
Sen. John Hickenlooper and Denver Rep. Diana DeGette also came to Aurora's defense and criticized Trump's inaccurate portrayal of the community and its new members.
After the speech, Aurora's Republican mayor, Mike Coffman, said he was disappointed that Trump did not take the opportunity to see the city's reality.
“The reality is that concerns about Venezuelan gang activity in our city and state have been grossly exaggerated and have unfairly harmed the city’s identity and sense of security,” Coffman said in a statement. “The city and state have not been conquered, invaded or occupied by migrant gangs. Incidents in Aurora, a city of 400,000, have been limited to a handful of specific apartment complexes, and our dedicated police officers have acted on these concerns and we will continue to do so.
Before Trump, Boebert and others amplified claims about Aurora
Several Colorado candidates and congressional representatives spoke at the pre-Trump rally. Gabe Evans, the Republican running for CD 8, spoke about his race, one of the key seats the GOP hopes to win in November.
Jeff Crank, CO-5 candidate in Colorado Springs, and Rep. Greg Lopez, who currently represents CO-4, both spoke about the border, crime rates and drugs. They shared their concerns about these issues across the state and in their districts.

Congresswoman Lauren Boebert arguably got the biggest reactions from the crowd. She called on Aurora residents to vote for John Fabbricatore, a former top ICE official who is the GOP candidate for District 6.
Boebert had the crowd chant, “Move that bus,” in reference to the expulsion of migrants.
At one point, Boebert said illegal immigrants deserved one thing: a one-way ticket home, to cheers from the crowd.

Wyoming Congresswoman Harriet Hageman spoke as did Colorado Republican Chairman Dave Williams. They called on the crowd to support Trump and secure Republican influence in Colorado.
As he took the stage, Trump shouted out Boebert, Lopez and Hageman, and endorsed Evans, Fabbricatore and Crank for Congress.

While Trump and others spoke at the Gaylord, Rick Martinez held a one-man rally in front of Edge at Lowry, the apartment complex that was often the center of Trump's speech.
Wearing a shirt depicting a hand silencing Trump and holding a sign urging readers to vote for Kamala Harris, Martinez, a West Denver resident, said he felt compelled to go to the apartment complex because He disagreed with Trump's rhetoric that Aurora had been overrun by immigrants.
It's just sad that he makes fun of these people and makes them out to be such a bad group of people who come here from Venezuela, traveling thousands of miles just to get to another country, to have a better one chance in life for their children and families, Martinez said.
Martinez, who as of 1:30 p.m. had spent about an hour and a half outside the apartment complex, said he didn't see anything that seemed out of the ordinary. He said he had polite conversations with residents and neighbors, many of whom do not speak English fluently.
Aside from Martinez, the complex was relatively quiet. From some windows, many of which were broken and poorly repaired with makeshift cardboard barriers, the sounds of children playing could be heard. Residents walked back and forth from their buildings, avoiding a small group of reporters waiting outside the apartments.
