How 'The Apprentice' Filmed Trump's Liposuction Scene
In Ali Abbasi's “The Apprentice,” there is a scene where Donald Trump (played by Sebastian Stan) undergoes a hair transplant to eliminate baldness as well as liposuction to appear thinner.
The film follows Trump as he starts out as a local real estate developer in the 1970s and rises to national celebrity in the 1980s. He learns power games from Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), a ruthless and hedonistic political fixer. The head of the hair department, Michelle Côté, along with prosthetics managers Sean Sansom and Brandi Boulet, were the artisans responsible for transforming Stan into Trump and helped achieve the sequence.
Over time, Trump begins to lose his hair and gain weight to the point where he takes amphetamines to help him lose weight. But it doesn't work.
Stan gained 15 pounds for the role to reflect Trump's body transformation; the costume department also made a padded jumpsuit with a prosthetic stomach. “In all the scenes where her shirt was off or her dress was open, we put the fake piece on her,” Boulet explains. The team used the prosthetic abdomen for a look they dubbed “Pills Donny.”
“We did a fake belly for Sebastian for part of his 'Pills Donny' look, which was my favorite, because he was all red, with spots, always eating, sweaty and a little disheveled.” , explains Boulet.

Due to his hair loss and weight gain, in the film Trump resorts to plastic surgery. For the hair transplant scene, Sansom reveals he used “the top of a fake head with a scalp. Michelle had a toupee and an area was cut out where the scalp would be removed. The hairs were struck one at a time, and the piece had a bloodline on it, and the scalpel also had a bloodline on it – and it was taken down within a day.
When audiences first learn about Trump, he is much younger, so Boulet used prosthetics on Stan's face. “We lifted his cheeks and eyes and tightened his face to make him look younger,” says Boulet, adding that “for the complexion, we made it a little lighter than the classic orange we see at the end”.
Cote even gave Stan a blonder wig with medium sideburns for this early phase of Trump. But it was an evolving look, with her eyebrows, hair and skin tone changing over time. “When he was younger, his hair was golden because he was outside more and had natural highlights,” says Côté. “As he grew older, he lost his strengths and [his hair] became darker.

To capture Trump's aging, Boulet would lower Stan's lifting parts. Cheek plumpers were then added to “bury” the actor's chiseled face and defined cheekbones. “He had upper dental plaque that did not cover his teeth. It was bumps under her lips that pushed the [mouth] larger area so it’s flatter,” says Samson. “And they were put in his lower lip to give him that nose-down Donald look.”
One of the challenges the team faced was Stan's facial hair. With all-day shoots, Stan's facial hair was starting to emerge, which meant constant touch-ups were necessary. “He has a five o'clock shadow as soon as he starts shaving. So we had to work with little things like that, where we had to cover it and blend the prosthetic.
Makeup artist Colin Penman remembers being captivated while watching the monitor as Stan and Maria Bakalova, who plays Ivana Trump, recreated the 1988 Oprah Winfrey interview. “I knew we had something because there's a fine line where we don't want to parody. We want it to be real,” he says.

Aside from his weight gain, Stan was fully prepared to perform and capture the essence of the former president. “Production had set aside a large file of reference videos and photos that everyone used,” says Sansom. “We were trying to recreate and reproduce certain photos as best we could.”
Boulet adds: “Sébastien had everything. His phone was full of searches. He would come in the morning and study and watch videos.
Plump cheeks were added to reshape Sebastian Stan's chiseled features.
