Turkish presidential adviser says Erdoan should serve another term

Mehmet Uçum, chief adviser to the Turkish presidency and vice-chairman of the Presidential Council for Legal Policies, stated on October 11 his wish that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would run again in the 2028 presidential elections on a Habertürk broadcast.
Uçum denied holding early elections, as this was President Erdoğan's second and final term. “Why would he make such a decision? He will continue to serve until the very last moment,” he said.
Uçum asserted that if parliament decides to repeat the elections before May 2028, President Erdoğan will then be able to run again. Such a decision would require the approval of 360 MPs.
Noting that it was too early for such discussions, Uçum shared his opinion. “My opinion is clear and I share it for the first time with you: I consider President Erdoğan to be a national asset and an asset for Turkey. There is no other leader in the world with as much experience and influence on global politics as Erdoğan.”
Putin could be mentioned among these leaders, Uçum said, but added that Erdoğan was a “unique” leader in a democratic system like Turkey, where governments change through elections. “I believe he is the most successful leader since Atatürk. He continued: “I personally think that Erdoğan should be allowed to run for another five years, given his role as the bearer of this system and his two presidential terms. If a new Constitution is drawn up that allows current and former presidents to run again, that would be another matter.”
Erdoğan had announced that the March 31 local elections would be his last elections, with the constitution limiting the presidency to two five-year terms. Some critics said Erdoğan's remarks were aimed at motivating the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) electorate to vote in local elections and highlighting the need for a new constitution.
Erdoğan's candidacy in the 2023 presidential election was controversial, as he had served two terms since becoming president in 2014.
