Imran's sisters transferred to Jhelum jail on remand – Pakistan

GUJAR KHAN/ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, sisters of PTI founder president Imran Khan, were on Saturday shifted to Jhelum district jail from Rawalpindis Adiala jail after an anti-terrorism court rejected an application by the police requested an extension of their pre-trial detention and ordered them to be transferred to prison on remand.

The two men were arrested during a PTI protest at D-Chowk in Islamabad last week.

Foolproof security arrangements have been made in Jhelum, police sources confirmed. They also claimed that the number of prisoners to be transferred to Jhelum jail was 500, adding that they would be transferred in small groups.

Attempts to contact Jail Superintendent Syed Hassan Mujtaba Shah for comment were unsuccessful.

ATC expresses displeasure with lawsuits' arguments

Earlier, the Rawalpindi ATC, while rejecting the police's request to extend the remand, had issued notices regarding the bail pleas of the two suspects.

Ms Aleema and Ms Uzma were brought before the court in a high-security environment, while legal representatives from both parties presented their arguments.

Defense lawyer Niazullah Khan Niazi argued that police had no reason to continue the pretrial detention.

Prosecutor Raja Naveed had previously requested an extension of the pre-trial detention, arguing that police needed more time to recover crucial evidence, including mobile phones and other documents.

Another defense lawyer, Usman Riaz Gill, said there are specific legal procedures for seeking pretrial detention of women that have not been properly followed.

He asked the court to release footage of his clients at the protest, arguing that this would demonstrate the illegality of the police actions.

Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra, however, rejected the request, ruling that the USB should instead be examined by police investigators.

The judge expressed dissatisfaction with the prosecution's explanations, pointing out that the police should have documented every development in the case.

The court has issued notices on the suspects' bail applications, with the next hearing scheduled for October 19.
