PTI sets conditions to withdraw from October 15 protests

ISLAMABAD: In a major shift from its stance on calling for protest at D-Chowk, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday announced that it would hold a massive protest on October 15 at Islamabad D-Chowk , if the party is not allowed to meet party founder Imran Khan.

Speaking to a private television channel, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram put a condition on the government to withdraw from the announced protest.

“Allow party founder Imran Khans to meet his family and lawyers or face massive protests on October 15,” Sheikh Waqas Akram said.

He said the government had banned meetings with Imran Khan for the last five or six weeks, adding that even lawyers and his family members were not allowed to meet him.

“We have no contact with our leader (Imran Khan) and reports of mistreatment in prison are worrying. Our protest is not against the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, but against access to Imran Khans, Sheikh Waqas Akram added.

He alleged that the government was harassing the families of PTI MPs to gain support for the constitutional amendments.

However, Information Minister Atta Tarar on Sunday said no one would be allowed to disrupt the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Islamabad, hinting at strict action against the protests planned by the PTI.

“Those who intend to conspire against the country better stay at home as no miscreant will be allowed to disrupt the SCO summit in Islamabad,” Atta Tarar said while addressing the media.

The minister said Islamabad had been fully secured to welcome foreign delegations, including 12 heads of state, to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference, scheduled for October 15-16.

“The (protest) announcements do not make any difference as Islamabad has become completely safe and secure,” he said referring to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf which had announced it would hold protests in the next few days.
