Man arrested with guns near Trump rally in Coachella had 'homemade' license plate and multiple passports, sheriff says
Deputies assigned to former President Donald Trump's rally in California's Coachella Valley arrested a Las Vegas man at a checkpoint Saturday for allegedly having a loaded firearm, a shotgun and a magazine. large capacity.
The suspect, identified by deputies as Vem Miller, 49, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was stopped in a black SUV at the intersection of Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive in Coachella before Trump arrived on the location of his gathering, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.
At a news conference Sunday, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, whose department helped with security for the event, said Miller's car had a “blatantly fake license plate.” , prompting the department to investigate further.
In a news release Sunday, the department said the suspect was “unlawfully in possession of a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine.” Bianco said Miller's vehicle was not registered and several passports and driver's licenses with different names were found inside.

Bianco said Miller was arrested without incident on the inner perimeter of a much larger outer perimeter surrounding the rally location, which deputies were patrolling Saturday.
“The way it worked yesterday was that only people who were allowed in the perimeter, outside the perimeter, inside a vehicle, were if you lived there or had documentation proving that you were going to this rally,” Bianco said.
He said Miller “gave every indication that he belonged there” when he approached the outer perimeter of the event, so he was allowed to continue. Officers then spotted the “homemade” license plate, Bianco said, and noticed the interior of the vehicle was “a mess.”
“The license plate is what we in law enforcement would recognize as a homemade plate and indicative of a group of individuals who claim to be sovereign citizens,” Bianco said.
Following his arrest, he was booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center on charges of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine.
While the Riverside County sheriff said he believed an assassination attempt had been foiled, the U.S. attorney's office said in a statement that former President Trump was not in danger and a responsible The federal government told CBS News there was no indication of an assassination attempt related to the incident. . The suspect was charged with two weapons offenses and released. No federal charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is ongoing, according to a joint statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service.
Bianco said his department is actively working with the Secret Service and the FBI to continue the investigation.
