Police arrest dozens of PTI workers demanding release of Imran Khan
Karachi police use baton and tear gas against PTI workers.
KARACHI/Lahore/Peshawar – Police on Friday arrested scores of PTI workers and leaders across the country for violating Article 144 by holding rallies in different cities, demanding the release of party founder Imran Khan and s opponent of the proposed 26th constitutional amendment, according to police and party officials.
The protests took place in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Sahiwal and other major cities. In Rawalpindi, police contingents led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kamran Asghar took out a flag march amid the PTI's call for protests. Members of the police, elite forces, Dolphin Force and traffic department took part in the flag march.
Meanwhile, more than 3,000 officials were deployed across the city. Security officials also arrested some PTI workers in different cities: three women workers were arrested in Lahore while 10 other activists were arrested in Dhoke Khabba, Rawalpindi, who were gathering to stage protests. In Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI workers staged a protest in front of the press club and shouted slogans against the proposed constitutional amendment. They also claimed that former Prime Minister Khan was illegally imprisoned by the ruling government and demanded that the “mistreatment” of the party founder stop in prison. The PTI lawyers' forum staged a protest in Gujranwala against the proposed judicial package at the premises of a district and sessions court. In Faisalabad, police blocked roads via trucks for traffic to eight central markets at the Clock Tower roundabout. Besides, containers were also placed at different localities of Gondlanwala Chowk, Sheikhupura Morr and Sheranwala Bagh of GT Road. Blockage of GT Road at different places has caused traffic jams in the city, making it difficult for commuters to reach their destinations.
In Sahiwal, police arrested former PTI MP and district president Rana Aftab and nine workers for staging a protest at Bhandari Chowk in violation of Section 144. Section 144 is a legal provision which authorizes district administrations to prohibit a gathering of four or more people in an area for a limited period. “Police arrested a total of 35 workers from both parties, including the leader of a religious party, as both parties violated Section 144,” Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) South said , Syed Asad Raza. In Karachi, PTI workers and leaders gathered at Empress Market after Friday prayers, despite the commissioner's imposition of Section 144. DIG Raza told media that police arrested 15 PTI workers , including Sindh PTI Chairman Haleem Adil Sheikh. Meanwhile, a press release issued by the PTI media cell said party supporters staged a peaceful protest at Empress Market “calling for the release of party chief Imran Khan, independence of judiciary and against the amendments unconstitutional. “However, police responded with unprovoked violence, using excessive force, including heavy tear gas bombardment, which caused hundreds of participants, including women, to faint,” the press release states. The statement added that the police launched a baton charge against the protesters and “arrested more than 20 PTI leaders, including MPA Rehan Bandokda, PTI Karachi minority wing president Suleman Kanwal and leader of Meraj Shah youth”.
The statement added that Sheikh strongly condemned the police crackdown, saying: “Today's protest at Empress Market was peaceful, but the authorities unleashed brutal tear gas bombardment and violence, particularly targeting women. We categorically condemn this attack. Sheikh also expressed concern over increasing restrictions on freedoms. “It's indicative of our times where, instead of speaking to the media, we are now faced with tear gas shells. A media blackout is imposed,” he said, quoted in the press release. “The Sindh government has once again shown its fascist and oppressive face,” Sheikh said. “However, these tear gas shells will not deter us as the entire nation strongly supports Imran Khan.” Other PTI leaders, including Karachi Senior Vice President Jafar ul-Hassan and Sindh spokesperson Muhammad Ali Baloch, criticized the police intervention and use of tear gas to disperse protesters in the press release. Images circulating on social media showed clouds of tear gas and riot police in the Saddar area.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
