Trump calls judge 'evil' for leaking records before election

Donald Trump called a judge “the most evil person” as she released more than 1,800 pages of evidence in special prosecutor Jack Smith's election conspiracy case against him.

The Republican White House nominee said U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan's rejection of his request to delay disclosure of the new evidence until after next month's vote amounted to “election interference.”

Legal analysts have questioned whether the filings in the case violate an internal Justice Department rule that prosecutors avoid any investigative steps that could affect an election within 60 days of the vote.

But in her ruling, Judge Chutkan argued that if she had kept the files secret, it could have been construed as election interference.

“If the court withheld information that the public was otherwise entitled to access solely because of the potential political consequences of its disclosure, that withholding could itself constitute – or appear to be – election interference,” he said. she writes.

Last year, a Texas woman was accused of making death threats against Judge Chutkan, citing the Trump case.

The 1,889 pages of heavily redacted documents released Friday largely repeat information already publicly available, including parts of former Vice President Mike Pence's biography and his official announcement that he would not overturn the results of the 2020 elections.

The new evidence is part of a motion Mr. Smith filed last month.

Appearing on a podcast Friday with right-wing media personality Dan Bongino, Trump blasted Judge Chutkan and called the special prosecutor a “sick puppy.”

The indictment focuses on the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and accuses Trump of illegally conspiring to overturn his election defeat three months earlier to Joe Biden.

During the interview, Trump also compared the detention of those accused of storming the Capitol to the U.S. internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

“Why are they still detained? No one has ever been treated like this,” he said. “Maybe the Japanese in World War II, honestly.”

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump could not be prosecuted for official acts performed as president.

As a result, Mr. Smith was forced to amend the historic charge against Trump and assert that he committed crimes while still in office, but as a private citizen.

He filed a new motion in September laying out the new case against the former president, which included allegations that Trump encouraged false claims of election fraud when he considered them “crazy.”

The motion also included new details about how relations between Trump and Pence deteriorated, with the former vice president asking Trump to stop repeating false theories of election fraud and move on.

The documents released Friday include transcripts of interviews with the House Jan. 6 committee that investigated the riot at the U.S. Capitol, portions of Pence's autobiography and fundraising emails sent to voters .

It is unclear whether the January 6 case will ever go to trial. Trump is expected to end the prosecution if he returns to the White House.

He faces several other criminal cases. He has already been convicted of 34 counts in New York in connection with a secret payment.
