Islamabad court acquits Imran Khan, Gandapur in vandalism case

ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Saturday released Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur from jail in a related case to violence and vandalism during the Azadi march of the former ruling party. May 25, 2022.

Following the ouster of the PTI government through a vote of no confidence in 2022, the former prime minister had called for a march to the federal capital, demanding fresh elections and dissolution of the assemblies.

The law and order situation in the federal capital turned chaotic after Khan and his convoy entered the city and started marching towards D-Chowk despite the Supreme Court's order to stage a jalsa on a land located between H9 and G9 zones of Islamabad.

The PTI protesters continued to engage in violent clashes with police and other law enforcement agencies and continued to move towards D-Chowk, defying the court's ban. During the riots, protesters also damaged public and private property in the capital.

Subsequently, an FIR was also registered against the PTI leaders at the Secretariat police station for instigating protesters to damage public property, interference in government affairs and other charges.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Islamabad court reserved its verdict.

Earlier today, civil judge Shahzad Khan announced the reserved verdict in the vandalism case.
