Scholz is visiting Turkey following an EU summit focused on migration and amid an emotional debate over stricter asylum rules and increasing deportations in the country.
Erdoan, during a meeting marking the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Turkey, expressed a desire to overcome previous difficulties in defense cooperation. “We want to leave behind some of the difficulties encountered in the past in the supply of products to the defense industry and develop our cooperation,” he said.
Erdogan also accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, calling for increased international pressure to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the besieged enclave. While rejecting Erdogan's accusation of genocide, Scholz stressed that civilian victims on both sides must be equally recognized, Frankfurter Rundschau reported.
“It’s no secret that we also have different views on Israel,” Scholz said, according to Daily mirror.
The German chancellor said he saw a possibility of de-escalating hostilities in Lebanon, if the United Nations resolution calling for the withdrawal of the Shiite Hezbollah militia from the border area was implemented.
Scholz arrived in Istanbul on Friday evening after a meeting with US President Joe Biden and French and British leaders in Berlin.
