Turkish and German leaders meet in Istanbul and find many areas of agreement. But not on Israel
ISTANBUL– Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Istanbul on Saturday, where the two leaders discussed bilateral concerns and opportunities for cooperation. But they could not agree on their respective positions with regard to Israel.
At an otherwise cordial press conference following their meeting, Erdogan made harsh remarks about Israel and its Western supporters.
It is clear that in Netanyahu's mind he does not want to limit the war to a defined fascist circle, but to expand it, he said, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The death of so many leaders is practically a matter of joy for them. And the West is jumping for joy.
Scholz, for his part, defended Israel's right to self-defense and expressly disagreed with Erdogan's characterization of the Gaza war as genocide.
The German leader highlighted Berlin's support for humanitarian aid to Gaza, a two-state solution and a ceasefire.
But I also want to say this: Germany does not believe… that the accusation of genocide is justified, Scholz said.
He stressed the importance of feeling compassion when children and other innocent civilians die, but stressed that genocide is a legal issue.
Despite their differences on Israel, Scholz and Erdogan struck a friendly tone when appearing before reporters.
The meeting took place when each side needed the other's help.
One of Turkey's main goals is the purchase of weapons from Europe, particularly Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.
Scholz hinted that there would be developments in this regard.
