The Newark MP managed to qualify for the last two Conservative Party leadership elections alongside Essex MP Kemi Badenoch. But do locals think Robert Jenrick is the right man for the job?

Initially seen as an ally of David Cameron in the more “moderate” wing of the party when he became an MP in 2014, Jenrick moved to the right after leaving his post as immigration minister last year.

They recognize that while his views have changed over the years, his conservative values ​​are the same.

Conservatives here have fond memories of knocking on Jenrick's doors when he was first elected in a by-election a decade ago.

Sue Saddington, a local councillor, remembers inviting her campaign team to her house for shepherd's pie.

Today, she's salivating again at the thought of him becoming leader.

This is a bold claim in a seat where more than 60% of voters supported other candidates in July's general election.

Jenricks' majority was reduced from 22,000 to 3,500 as Britain's Labor and Reform made huge gains in the election.

He is now the only Conservative MP from Nottinghamshire or neighboring Derbyshire.

This result is described as a simple incident by Mr Roberts.

His most immediate concern is the limited options given to members in the leadership election.

We only have two right-wing candidates and I would have liked members to have a wider choice,” he said.

“That’s why going down to two was a mistake, there should have been at least three.”

The timing of the election campaign is also wrong, according to Mr. Roberts.

Unless a candidate withdraws, the result will be announced after the Budget – meaning Rishi Sunak, not his successor, will answer to Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Ms Saddington and Mr Toberts stress the importance of the party uniting behind whoever wins.

But Ms Oliver is not convinced.
