Xi aims to deepen ties with new President Prabowo (state media) – Asia and the Pacific
Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Sunday he would maintain “close strategic communication” with his new Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto, in a message congratulating him on his inauguration, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Xi said “China and Indonesia are traditionally friendly neighbors, and the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries has continued to improve steadily and entered a new stage of building toward a common future,” according to the CCTV report.
On Monday, Xi held a telephone conversation with outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, expressing his belief that President Prabowo's new government will continue its friendly policy toward China.
Prabowo assumed the presidency on Sunday after winning the country's election with policies including free meals for schoolchildren and with the incumbent leader's son as his running mate.
Prabowo, wearing a traditional black hat and navy blue suit with woven maroon and gold sarong, officially became Indonesia's eighth president on Sunday morning after being sworn in during a ceremony at Indonesia's parliament.
Prabowo, who twice unsuccessfully ran for president, said in a speech to lawmakers after being sworn in that he would be president for all Indonesians, even those who did not vote for him.
He was joined at the inauguration ceremony by his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, 37, the eldest son of former President Jokowi.
