Prepare for war Chinese President Xi Jinping orders military
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the military to improve its war preparedness and strengthen its combat capabilities, in a sign of increased emphasis on strategic deterrence amid growing tensions with the West .
Xi, during an inspection of a rocket brigade of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), stressed the importance of comprehensively strengthening training and war preparations to ensure the army is combat ready .
According to ISNA, the president stressed that troops must develop “strong combat capabilities” and protect China's strategic security and core interests.
His remarks come amid ongoing tensions with the United States over Taiwan, which China considers an inalienable part of its territory.
Beijing claims sovereignty over the self-governing island and maintains that Taiwan cannot engage in formal diplomatic relations or join international organizations independently.
The United States, however, has strengthened its ties with the Taiwanese government and provided it with military equipment, much to the dismay of Beijing. Last month, the US State Department approved a possible arms deal worth $228 million to provide spare parts for Taiwan's military. Taiwan's Defense Ministry confirmed that the agreement would come into effect shortly.
In addition to arms sales, high-profile visits by U.S. officials to Taiwan have further strained relations between Beijing and Washington. A US congressional delegation visited the island last year, following former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial 2022 trip, which sparked strong protests in China.
Although Washington formally recognizes Beijing's sovereignty under the One China Policy, it continues to provide military and diplomatic support to Taiwan.
China responded by imposing sanctions on U.S. defense contractors involved in arms sales to the island, calling the actions a provocation and a threat to regional stability.
