60 Minutes responds to Trump's accusations regarding Kamala Harris interview
60 Minutes responded to Donald Trump's accusation that the CBS news magazine edited its Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris to make the interview more favorable to him — and the Trump campaign released its own statement in response.
On Sunday, the show released the following statement in response to the Republican presidential candidate:
Former President Donald Trump is accusing 60 Minutes of misleadingly editing our Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. This is false.
60 Minutes gave an excerpt of our interview to Face the Nation that used a section of his response that was longer than 60 Minutes'. Same question. Same answer. But a different part of the answer. When we edit an interview, whether it's a politician, an athlete, or a movie star, we strive to be clear, to the point, and to the point. The 60 Minutes portion of his response was more succinct, leaving time for other topics in a broad 21-minute segment.
Remember, Mr. Trump backed out of his interview with 60 Minutes and the vice president participated.
Our long-standing invitation to former President Trump remains open. If he would like to discuss the issues facing the nation and the Harris interview, we would be happy to have him on 60 Minutes.
In response, the Trump campaign released its own statement: “60 Minutes just admitted to doing exactly what President Trump accused them of doing,” said Karoline Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign. “They edited a different answer – from a different part of her answer – to make Kamala Harris appear less incoherent than she actually was. Their statement is not a denial, it is an admission that they did exactly what they were accused of. This reminds us how hopelessly biased 60 Minutes is and how right President Trump was to decline its invitation to submit to his fake news hack. Free the transcription!
Trump called the broadcast of Harris' interview a “giant fake news scam” and suggested CBS was trying to help him. The accusations arose after it was pointed out online that Harris gave a different answer to a question in a teaser aired on CBS's Face the Nation than what was aired on 60 Minutes. The question in question concerned the Biden administration's influence on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“It seems like Prime Minister Netanyahu isn't listening,” 60 Minutes' Bill Whitaker told Harris in the interview.
In the teaser, Harris pauses briefly then says: “The work we've done has resulted in a number of Israeli movements in this region that have been strongly motivated or resulted from many things, including our advocacy for needs. what will happen in the region.
During 60 Minutes, Harris quickly responds: “We are not going to stop doing what is necessary to make the United States clear on our position on the need to end this war.” »
On his Truth Social feed, Trump wrote: “His REAL ANSWER WAS CRAZY, OR DUMB, so they actually REPLACED it with another answer in order to save it or, at least, make it look better.” »
Trump has since called for CBS to lose its FCC license over the interview. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel rejected the idea, adding that “Trump's threats to free speech are serious and should not be ignored.”
Meanwhile, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley recently said the Trump campaign was offering “shifting explanations” for why the former president was pulling out of the interview.
