Prabowo takes office with largest firm since 1960s
Former military general Prabowo Subianto was sworn in as Indonesia's president, heralding the creation of the country's largest government since the 1960s.
The 73-year-old, who faced allegations of human rights abuses for decades, was sworn in as the country's eighth president on Sunday.
This marks the end of an era under former leader Joko Widodoknown locally as Jokowi, who presided over a decade of economic growth and infrastructure development.
After twice failing to become president, Prabowo finally succeeded in ascending to the top office after winning more than 58% of the vote in February's election, against two rivals.
Prabowo was sworn in with his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi's eldest son.
More than 30 leaders attended the inauguration, including British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
He named 48 ministers and 58 deputy ministers in his new cabinet, compared to 34 ministers and 30 deputy ministers under Jokowi. They were officially sworn in Monday afternoon.
Some observers believe that the composition of Prabowo's cabinet – with 17 of the 48 ministers reappointed from Jokowi's cabinet – was a “political reward” for his predecessor, whose tacit support would have propelled Prabowo's electoral victory.
The reappointments include that of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Chief Minister of Economy Airlangga Hartarto.
“It seems Prabowo wants to repay those who supported him politically rather than prioritizing institutional reforms,” public policy specialist Lina Miftahul Jannah told BBC Indonesia.
A “bloated cabinet” can complicate bureaucracy and lengthen the policy-making process, she said, adding that reorganizing different ministries would also require a lot of resources.
“It’s expensive, in the sense that it’s not just the money spent, but also the energy,” says Dr. Jannah.
Some see this programming as a sign of political continuity in Southeast Asia's largest economy.
These renewals also show that Prabowo “does not want to take new risks”, political scientist Burhanuddin Muhtadi told Reuters.
“That’s why he chose key figures who served under Jokowi,” he said. Prabowo had promised during his campaign to continue Jokowi's policies focused on development and infrastructure.
In his inauguration speech on Sunday, Prabowo pledged to eradicate corruption and poverty and said he would be the president of all Indonesians.
“We must always understand that a free nation is where people are free,” the president said in a fiery speech that lasted nearly an hour.
“They must be freed from fear, poverty, hunger, ignorance, oppression and suffering.”
On the foreign policy front, he reaffirmed Indonesia's long-standing policy of non-alignment, in which the country does not ally with major power blocs.
“We will oppose all colonialism and defend the interests of oppressed people around the world,” he said.
Prabowo's new cabinet will begin its term with a three-day retreat at a military academy in Central Java.
Ministers and their deputies will sleep in tents, and the retreat aims to strengthen ties within the cabinet and help members understand Prabowo's vision, Reuters cited Migrant Protection Minister Abdul Kadir Karding as saying.
Prabowo will make his first global appearances at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit next month and the G20 summit immediately afterward.
