Russian President Vladimir Putin called Chinese President Xi Jinping his dear friend, amid growing cooperation between Moscow and Beijing, as leaders met at the BRICS summit in Kazan.
Xi also expressed gratitude during the meeting regarding the growing partnership between Russia and China, saying the deep relations between the two countries have continuously deepened and expanded comprehensive strategic coordination and practical cooperation.
Since Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine in 2022, China has been a key partner providing military assistance to Moscow in the form of dual-use components, technologies and tools that can be used for military machines.
Shortly before the Russian military offensive, China declared a “limitless” partnership with Russia during Putin’s visit to Beijing.
Xi said Beijing's cooperation with Moscow is a stabilizing factor for the world.
“The world is experiencing profound changes unprecedented in a century, and the international situation is chaotic and interdependent,” Xi told Putin, adding that ties between countries have given strong impetus to development, revitalization and the modernization of the two countries and have made important contributions to respect for international equity and justice.
Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said the BRICS meeting in Kazan was the largest foreign policy event ever hosted by any country, with “Russia hosting 36 countries and 20 heads of state.”
The Kremlin views the meeting as an opportunity to come together to challenge Western influences in world affairs.
The BRICS alliance refers to a group of emerging economies whose main members are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but which has rapidly expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have officially applied to become members, while other countries have expressed interest in joining the alliance.
