Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday (October 22) for bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Brics summit in Russia, Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misri announced.
The meeting, which is expected to focus on improving relations between India and China after the two sides reached consensus on a patrol agreement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) after years of tensions, should take place Wednesday October 23.
“I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting tomorrow between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Brics summit,” YEARS Misri was quoted as saying.
The announcement followed a statement from China's Foreign Ministry, which said the two countries were in regular communication through diplomatic and military channels to resolve ongoing border issues. “In the recent period, China and India have reached a resolution on relevant issues,” said Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Although the deal has been confirmed, specific details have not been disclosed.
India announced a day earlier that it had reached an agreement with China on patrols along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, marking an important step in easing the military standoff that began in 2020.
The 2024 BRICS summit, hosted by Russia, aims to strengthen cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries in the face of global tensions, including the conflict in Ukraine.
The summit recently expanded its scope to include new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, strengthening its role as a platform for discussion on global development.
