Indonesia targets up to one million hectares of new rice fields in 2025
JAKARTA (Oct 22): Indonesia plans to open between 750,000 hectares and one million hectares (2.47 million acres) of new rice fields in 2025, as part of new President Prabowo Subianto's efforts to promote of food self-sufficiency, its Minister of Agriculture declared on Tuesday.
Prabowo took office on Sunday, beginning his five-year term with a fiery speech reiterating emphasis on achieving food and energy self-sufficiency.
Indonesia is a major importer of food products such as wheat and sugar. Over the past two years, its rice imports have surged, reaching more than three million tonnes each year, as domestic production has been affected by unusually dry weather.
In addition to the new rice fields, the government plans to intensify production of existing rice fields through programs such as the distribution of water pumps, said Andi Amran Sulaiman, agriculture minister under former President Joko Widodo who retains his position in Prabowo's cabinet.
“(The goal of self-sufficiency) is not easy. We need to coordinate so that in the future regulations are simplified and we can act quickly,” Amran told reporters after a meeting with the minister State Enterprises and State Food Enterprises.
It was unclear how effective efforts to increase next year's rice production would be, or how soon the new rice fields would begin producing.
Indonesia's rice production in 2024 is expected to decrease by 2.43% from the previous year to 30.34 million tonnes, due to a delay in the planting and harvesting season due to prolonged dry weather compared to 2023. Production in 2023 was also affected by the dry weather phenomenon of El Niño.
Prabowo aims to expand its farmland by three million hectares over the next five years, roughly the size of Belgium, to grow basic products, the country's deputy minister said earlier this month. Agriculture Sudaryono, who also retains his position in the new government.
Amran said the government was considering creating agricultural land in the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, as well as the easternmost region of Papua.
