Turkey quietly restricts exports of military goods to Russia following US warning, reports FT

Turkey has quietly blocked the export of US military goods to Russia following a warning from Washington, the Financial Times (FT) reported on October 22.

In recent weeks, Ankara has updated its customs systems to stop the export of more than 40 categories of U.S.-made items deemed essential to Russia's war in Ukraine, according to FTP sources.

The new restrictions target goods such as electronic chips, processors and control systems, believed to be used in weapons.

According to the report, Turkish banks have also reduced their transactions with Russian entities over the past year, following threats of US sanctions.

The updated policy regarding Russian exports has not been publicly announced due to political sensitivities.

Although Turkey is a member of NATO, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan strives to maintain positive relations with Russia and Ukraine.

Turkey has also facilitated the flow of Russian oil to the European Union since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, allowing the Kremlin to circumvent the bloc's sanctions.

In 2023, Turkey became the world's largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels, importing about 42.2 billion euros ($45.9 billion) worth of oil, natural gas and coal from the country, a fold increase five in the last decade.

At the same time, Erdogan has publicly supported Ukrainian sovereignty and his administration has provided significant aid to Ukraine since Russia's large-scale invasion began.

“We support the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian Crimea,” Erdogan said on February 3.

Turkey also negotiated a 2022 grain deal with the UN that has proven key to easing a global surge in food prices caused in part by the war. It allowed Ukraine to export its agricultural products via the Black Sea, despite the ongoing invasion.
