India-China relations: India and China should handle their differences 'properly', Xi Jinping tells PM Modi in first formal talks in 5 years
Both sides should shoulder their international responsibilities and set an example for the development of other emerging economies, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as saying during a meeting with Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, in Russia.
The two countries must realize their respective development dreams, the Chinese president said.
Prime Minister Modi and Xi Jinping today held their first bilateral talks in five years, signaling that ties between the Asian giants, damaged by a deadly military clash in 2020, had started to mend.
The meeting comes two days after New Delhi announced it had reached a deal with Beijing to resolve the four-year military standoff on their disputed Himalayan border.
Relations between the world's two most populous nations – both nuclear powers – have been strained since a clash between their troops on Ladakh's largely undemarcated western Himalayan border left 20 Indian soldiers dead and four Chinese in 2020. Neighbors have increased their military presence. along the icy border ever since, adding tens of thousands of troops and weapons over the past four years. Modi and Xi have not held formal bilateral talks since, although they have both participated in multilateral events. Their last summits took place in October 2019 in the southern Indian town of Mamallapuram.
The two men spoke briefly on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022 and exchanged pleasantries. They spoke again on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August 2023, but ended up publishing different versions of the conversation, indicating that the two sides did not see eye to eye.
Xi skipped the G20 summit in New Delhi the following month, a decision seen as another setback in their relations.
Diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent months after the two countries' foreign ministers met in July and agreed to step up negotiations to ease border tensions.
While India has made improving broader political and trade relations contingent on finding a solution to the border standoff, Wednesday's talks between the two leaders are expected to result in potentially more Chinese investment in India.
New Delhi has increased monitoring of investments from China, blocked direct flights between the two countries and virtually banned the issuance of visas to Chinese nationals since the clashes in Ladakh.
Neither New Delhi nor Beijing – which confirmed the border deal on Tuesday – have shared details of how the standoff will be resolved under the agreement reached this week.
An Indian military source told Reuters the deal would allow both sides to patrol disputed points of the border on an agreed schedule to avoid clashes.
