Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife released on bail in state gifts case, party says

ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani court has granted bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife in a case relating to illegal sale of state gifts, her party said on Wednesday – a relief for the politician in trouble who could see his wife released from prison for the first time in months.

Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, are currently in prison on multiple charges, including illegally selling gifts worth more than 140 million rupees ($501,000) received during his 2018 premiership. to 2022 of a state treasure known locally as “Toshakhana”.

The Islamabad High Court said Bibi was released on bail after his arrest for “reasons to be recorded later”, according to an order shared by the media office of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party .

The PTI said bail had been submitted for Bibi's release and hoped she would be released from prison on Wednesday after “264 days of illegal incarceration”.

Bibi, Khan's third wife, was first arrested in January. She was acquitted of charges of violating Islamic injunctions by her marriage to Khan, but was quickly rearrested in the state gifts case before being released.

Khan has faced dozens of cases since he was ousted as prime minister in 2022 and launched a protest movement against a coalition of his rivals led by current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The Sharif-led government says it does not interfere in the judicial process.
