DULUTH, GA. If the road to the White House passes through seven swing states, then Georgia is a flashing neon sign at the end of the road for both campaigns.

It's a state that President Biden won by just 12,000 votes in 2020, a state that was the starting point for both the false claims of voter fraud and the political fallout that followed, and a state that is home to the key demographic groups that will help decide the next president.

On Wednesday, it was also the scene of two events featuring former President Donald Trump. The Republican candidate spoke at a central Georgia church for a ballot and believer town hall aimed at the GOP's evangelical base, before heading to a rally in the northern Gwinnett County suburbs from Atlanta.

Vice President Harris will hold a rally with former President Barack Obama in DeKalb County, just east of Atlanta, on Thursday as reinvigorated Democrats seek to mobilize their base of black voters and keep intact the divisive coalition that narrowly elected Biden. Before that visit, she participated in a CNN town hall on Wednesday, where she said she agreed that Trump was a “fascist.”

Georgia is a rapidly growing state with a large population of non-white voters, a significant share of college-educated suburban voters, and many young voters, all key constituencies that could influence the outcome in Georgia and on other battlefields.

Nearly one in three Georgia voters have already cast ballots in the presidential race, as election officials tout record early in-person turnout.

Trump painted a dire picture of the nation

At Christ Chapel Church in Zebulon, Ga., Trump ran through his usual campaign talking points on everything from immigration and hurricane recovery to oil production and his poll numbers.

Much like the rest of his election campaign, Trump painted a dire picture of the state of the country and what it would look like if he lost.

“I think we really energized a lot of people this time, because they saw how serious the situation was,” he said. The last four years have been a horror show. Absolute horror show.

He also said persecution was ongoing against Catholics, school boards and religious people.

In Gwinnett County, Trump spoke at a rally organized by the conservative group Turning Point USA. Thousands were there to see Trump and to hear from more than a dozen local and national figures who have picked up the former president's mantle, including Tucker Carlson, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

This is a very important distinction: Election Day is the last day of voting, said Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk. We have 12 days of voting left in this state… So for those of you who have already voted, you need to go find a low propensity voter. Someone who is a little hesitant about voting and taking it to the polls.

Early voting statistics in Georgia show strong turnout from small, Republican-heavy counties and those that vote reliably in Republican primaries. An NPR analysis of these voters also found that a large percentage of them are Republicans who are choosing to vote earlier than in previous elections.

Harris will speak at the same location where Trump delivered his January 6 speech

Harris was last in Georgia this weekend, speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of about 11,000 at the Lakewood Amphitheater and attending two church services, while attacking the energy level and scattered speeches of Trump.

Harris' closing message leans heavily on warnings that Trump is unfit to be president again and poses a threat to democracy. His campaign said it would make the point Tuesday, from the same location on the National Mall where Trump spoke on Jan. 6, 2021, before a mob of his supporters marched toward the Capitol in a failed insurrection attempt .

Harris took advantage Wednesday of remarks made by Trump's former chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, who called Trump a fascist with a dictatorial leadership style. The Trump campaign said Kelly fabricated his stories about the former president.

After responding to Kelly's comments from her residence in Washington, D.C., Harris traveled to Pennsylvania to participate in a CNN town hall. When asked directly if she thought Trump was a fascist, Harris replied: “Yes, yes, I do.”

Harris appeared at the town hall after Trump declined a second debate.

His campaign also sent two of the party's most beloved figures, former President Obama and his wife Michelle, to several swing states this week to boost turnout.
