Jailed Imran Khan calls 26th Amendment an 'attack on the Constitution'

ISLAMABAD: At a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTT) lawyers held on the orders of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), party founder Imran Khan termed the recently passed 26th constitutional amendment, which empowers parliamentarians to choose the chief justice, to “attack” the Constitution of Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, PTI lawyer Faisal Chaudhry said the incarcerated former prime minister had expressed his displeasure over the 26th constitutional amendment.

“The PTI founder said the nation was tyrannized by this act,” the lawyer said, adding that Khan refused to comment on the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

Faisal further said that the deposed prime minister praised the PTI workers and supporters for their sacrifices. “The PTI founder is not afraid of any adversity,” he added.

He noted that they were making efforts to reduce the difficulties faced by the PTI founder.

Chaudhry claimed that the PTI founder was kept in a six-by-eight cell, adding that he was subjected to psychological torture.

“A petition will be filed with the IHC against the circumstances under which the former prime minister is being held.”

Further, he said that Imran had asked the leaders to lead from the front.

For his part, PTI leader Shoaib Shaheen said such “state terrorism” is unprecedented, adding that the jailed party founder was not aware of the adoption of the 26th Amendment and the appointment of Judge Yahya.

“We informed him of the developments, including the release on bail of his wife Bushra Bibi,” he said, adding that Imran expressed satisfaction with his wife's release.

The meeting took place after the IHC ordered Adiala prison authorities to allow a meeting between the incarcerated former prime minister and his lawyers.

This decision comes against the backdrop of the PTI's strenuous efforts to secure the release of its founder.

Earlier, the court had ordered the Adiala jail administration to produce the PTI founder before it today at 3 p.m.

“Bring the PTI founder, he will have a meeting with his lawyers,” the IHC said while hearing a contempt of court case against the Adiala prison superintendent.

The jailed politician has been behind bars at Adiala Center for over a year due to a plethora of court cases following his ouster from power in April 2022.

Despite getting relief in many cases, the PTI founder remains incarcerated after being jailed in the new Toshakhana case linked to illegal sale of state gifts.

Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were arrested in the case soon after their acquittal in the iddat case, also known as the un-Islamic nikah case, in July this year.
