Trump says he will quickly fire Jack Smith if he wins another term

Donald Trump said Thursday he would use his presidential powers to end Jack Smith's investigation into multiple criminal cases he brought against the former president, vowing to fire the special prosecutor who charged him with several criminal charges.

Oh, it's so easy. It's so easy, Trump said when asked by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt if he would pardon himself or fire Jack Smith.

I would fire him in two seconds, Trump said.

Smith was named special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee two investigations into Trump regarding his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and his alleged mishandling of classified documents. The classified documents case was ultimately thrown out by a federal judge, but Smith is appealing.

Trump still faces charges in Smith's election subversion case. After the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity, Smith filed a new indictment in August that lightened the allegations but did not drop the four charges against Trump.

Trump faces charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

If the former president fired Smith, it would allow the Justice Department and Trump's attorney general to drop charges against him and end legal proceedings.

Trump, who was convicted earlier this year on 34 counts in a separate New York case against him, has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that the justice system was being used as a weapon against him because he was running for president. But Trump has repeatedly suggested he would use the justice system as a weapon against his political rivals if re-elected.

Trump's comments to Hewitt are not the first time he has suggested firing Smith. Trump, who frequently attacks Smith on the campaign trail, told Breitbart last July that he would not retain the special counsel if re-elected.

Trump regularly suggested during his election campaign that he would use the justice system as a weapon to prosecute his political opponents if re-elected. The former president has repeatedly said he feels justified in prosecuting his political opponents over his own criminal charges and has pledged to appoint a special prosecutor to prosecute President Joe Biden and his family if he regains the White House.

Trump has also called his political opponents enemies within as he ramps up his rhetoric against his perceived enemies in the latter part of the campaign. Trump called Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi enemies within and claimed they posed a greater threat than foreign adversaries.

Trump went so far as to suggest using the military to deal with the enemy within on Election Day, saying he is not worried about chaos from his supporters or foreign actors, but rather from the crazy people of the radical left. Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted Trump's comments on the campaign trail, saying he was unstable, unhinged and seeking unchecked power.
