Bushra Bibi, wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, released on bail

Bushra Bibi, wife of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, was released from prison on Thursday after being granted bail in a case involving the illegal sale of state gifts, ending nearly nine months of incarceration.

The release represents the biggest legal relief for Khan and his family since his imprisonment in August last year. Bibi, who was arrested in January, was released from Adiala prison in the garrison town of Rawalpindi, where Khan remains.

Local television stations showed a small number of supporters throwing rose petals at two white SUVs as they escorted him out of prison.

Bibi faces at least one other corruption case related to obtaining land from a real estate developer.

“Welcome Bushra Bibi! You have faced extremely difficult times, disgusting campaigns and smear attempts against you during your illegal stay in prison,” Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, said. in a message on X.

Khan himself faces dozens of other cases, including charges of violating anti-terrorism laws, brought since he was removed as prime minister in 2022 and launched a protest movement against a coalition of its rivals led by current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The Khans deny all accusations, saying they are fabricated by the government to discredit the 72-year-old former cricket star, who remains hugely popular and whose candidates won the most seats in February's general election .

The Sharif-led government says it does not interfere in the judicial process. Khan's standoff with the country's powerful military, which he says supports Sharif, has spawned the worst political unrest in decades in the country of 241 million people.

Bibi, real name Bushra Khan, is Khan's third wife. The two married six months before he became prime minister for the first time in 2018.

Khan often called her his spiritual leader and she is known for her dedication to Sufism, a mystical form of Islam.

She mostly stayed out of the public eye, appearing in only one television interview, also wearing her traditional veil.
