The Culture Secretary has hit back at French proposals to charge Britons and other non-EU visitors extra to see the Mona Lisa.

Minister Chris Bryant says entry to the UK's national galleries and museums is FREE for everyone. You are welcome. You are welcome.

I pray you, translates to you are welcome in French.

Her response came after French Culture Minister Rachida Dati said she wanted to increase entry fees to the Louvre, home of the Mona Lisa.

She also wants to charge visitors to enter Notre-Dame Cathedral for the first time.

In an interview with Le Figaro, she declared: “My position is very clear: I want visitors from outside the EU to pay more for their entry ticket and this supplement to finance the renovation of national heritage.”

It is thought the move could increase the cost of a visit to the Louvre from the current price of 22 to around 25-30, for Britons and other non-EU visitors.

The minister would also like to provide a supplement to visit Versailles and the Musée d'Orsay art gallery.

Mr. Bryant tweeted: Hello, France. You fully understand the problem of financing cultural heritage, but I have heard that you are considering charging a premium for non-European visitors to the Louvre. UK national galleries and museums like @britishmuseum @NationalGallery are FREE for everyone. You are welcome. You are welcome.

Government sources say the French cannot impose additional costs on other EU members, due to the organization's rules.

The row comes after weeks of improving relations between the UK and EU countries, part of Keir Starmers' planned Great Reset with the bloc.

The Prime Minister made the first major breakthrough in his plan this week with a historic new defense deal with Germany. Defense Secretary John Healey hailed the deal as a major boost to Europe's security and a landmark moment in relations between the UK and Germany.

The Prime Minister has promised to repair Britain's damaged relationship with the European Union, for the benefit of generations to come. However, he ruled out any return to the single market or the customs market.

It was a Labor culture secretary, Chris Smith, who made entry to British museums free, shortly after his party's landslide victory in the 1997 general election.
