Russia's Rosatom receives offer from Erdogan to build second nuclear power plant in Trkiye
Russian nuclear company Rosatom has received an offer from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to build a second nuclear power plant in Trkiye.
This development was revealed by Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev during a interview with Russian media, reports News.Az.
Likhachev said the proposal came directly from President Erdogan after discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He mentioned that consultations are underway at the government level regarding the potential expansion of operations at the Sinop site, located on the Black Sea coast.
He highlighted that Turkish companies have shown keen interest in nuclear technologies, demonstrating their understanding of the industry's requirements and challenges. “We are receiving significant support from Turkish companies to continue our construction efforts,” Likhachev noted. “Our goal is to create a unified approach as much as possible, leveraging our experience from the Akkuyu project to standardize processes at the Sinop site.”
In July, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said Rosatom was better placed than its foreign competitors to help build the Sinop nuclear power plant, citing Rosatom's experience with the plant Akkuyu nuclear power as a significant advantage.
Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant built in Trkiye. The project is being implemented in accordance with the intergovernmental agreement signed by Russia and Trkiye in 2010. The plant will include four Russian-designed Generation 3+ VVER reactors. The power of each reactor will be 1,200 MWt. Once commissioned and brought to full capacity, the nuclear power plant will produce approximately 35 billion kWh each year. The plant is designed to provide up to 10% of Trkiye's electricity needs.
