Pakistani Punjab govt lifts ban on Imran Khan meetings in Adiala jail

Lahore: Pakistan's Punjab government on Saturday lifted the ban on meetings of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi for over a year.

The Punjab government has lifted the ban on prisoners' meetings in Adiala jail, a senior officer said.

The ban on gathering prisoners, including the 72-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, was imposed on October 4 for security reasons, he explained.

The government had banned Khan's meetings after the PTI launched a protest call on October 4 in Islamabad demanding his release and independence of the judiciary.

Earlier, he had said that he was ready to spend his entire life in prison but would not compromise on his struggle for Haqiqi Azadi (real freedom).

Ministers say Khan's freedom is linked to his unconditional apology for the May 9, 2023 riots in which PTI workers allegedly attacked state and military installations.

Khan, however, demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents.

Today, Imran Khan has served 400 days in prison, but the powers that be could not break his resolve in favor of Haqiqi Azadi. The entire nation supports him and he will come out of jail soon, said senior PTI leader Asghar Gujjar.

He said today's historic rally in Islamabad would be an eye-opener for this fake Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government which could no longer detain Khan.

Khan spoke about the deplorable conditions he is being held in prison.

I didn't spend a single day in the prison hospital. Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Zardari were given air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms. One of the prisoners cooked for me, but I never complained. Only three visits are allowed to meet me per week, while Nawaz Sharif met 40 people (when he was in prison). It was an open day for him. Nawaz Sharif even used to speak to journalists in the privacy of his own room. I send out the names of six of my party leaders every week, and only three of them are allowed to meet with me for barely thirty minutes. I have so many cases against me, and yet I am allowed to meet only six lawyers, the PTI supremo had said.

Earlier this week, a Pakistani court granted bail to Bushra Bibi, Khan's wife, in the Toshakhana corruption case involving the alleged illegal sale of state gifts, almost nine months after her arrest.

Khan was arrested on August 5 last year after his conviction in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been imprisoned in various cases.
