Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Prime Minister Modi was ahead of others on AI and asked him to address ministers 6 years ago.
Nvidia CEO says 6 years ago, when no one was talking about artificial intelligence (AI), Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to address his cabinet on AI.
“About 6 years ago, when I first met Modi Ji, he asked me to meet with his office and talk to him about artificial intelligence,” said Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, he a few days ago. He made the comments during his recent conversation with Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai.
“I was so surprised,” he added. “It was literally the first time a head of government had asked me to address his office on this particular topic (IA).”
The Nvidia CEO said he was surprised that the prime minister asked him to address the cabinet because “it took a long time before anyone talked about artificial intelligence.”
Huang also revealed that during his last visit to India, Prime Minister Modi said something “quite profound” to him. Modi told him it made perfect sense for India to make its own AI, instead of outsourcing data to import intelligence.
The Nvidia CEO recently echoed the same thought in a conversation with India Today. In one question, he was asked how India could avoid being relegated to a back-office role in the new AI-powered world. He said India should stop providing its labor force for software development done elsewhere. “Why export the labor when the software is built elsewhere? Why not make the intelligence here and then export it,” Huang said.
Nvidia CEO proposes that India prioritize developing and exporting its own AI innovations, with the aim of establishing itself as a leader in AI development, rather than simply to serve as a support center, as it did during the IT boom.
“You have the data, the energy and the infrastructure. You have the essential ingredients in the country to be able to harvest the raw data and turn it into intelligence,” he said. “Many Indians will enjoy Hindi on their phones, all over the world. These tokens should be made here (India). This intelligence should be made here.”
During his visit to India, the Nvidia CEO also introduced a new AI model in Hindi named Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, designed to enable Indian companies to create their own AI models.
