Prime Minister congratulates chess grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi on historic feat of 2,800 points
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Arjun Erigaisi after the Indian chess grandmaster recently crossed the 2800 mark in live chess rankings. Erigaisi made history on Thursday October 24, becoming the youngest Indian and only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to cross the prestigious threshold of 2,800 Elo.
Competing for Team Alkaloid in the 2024 European Club Chess Cup, Erigaisi reached this milestone with a victory over Russian Dmitry Andreikin in the fifth round, playing with the white pieces. This feat also propelled him to 3rd in the world in the live rankings, making him the 16th player to surpass 2800.
French player Alireza Firouzja, who reached 2800 at 18 years and five months, remains the youngest to do so, while five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen is second on that list.
Regarding Prime Minister Modi went on to say that the step taken by Erigaisi would inspire many young people to take up chess as a sport and shine on the world stage.

Erigaisi recently played a pivotal role in India's historic victory in the Chess Olympiad. Competing in Budapest, Hungary, Arjun's performance was exceptional; Playing on India's third board, he recorded nine wins and two draws in 11 rounds, making a substantial contribution to India's triumph.
