Sher Afzal Marwat slams KP govt for 'ignoring' Imran Khan

PESHAWAR: Member of National Assembly (MNA) of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sher Afzal Marwat on Saturday took dig at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for neglecting the party's incarcerated founding president Imran Khan.

Imran has been imprisoned in Rawalpindis Adiala Prison for over a year now.

In a fiery speech while addressing a gathering of PTI activists in Peshawar, Marwat accused the party leadership of abandoning the founder when he needed help.

PTI leaders were fighting among themselves for ministries and positions in the party, he said, sharing his disappointment and asserting that loyalty to the imprisoned former prime minister had been overshadowed by internal conflicts and personal objectives of the party.

“Some KP ministers are more focused on benefits than promoting PTI goals,” he said.

The MP said he had been threatened with expulsion from the party, but such threats could not deter him.

Marwat said he planned to meet the PTI founder to discuss the situation in the KP government, adding that he would brief him on the alleged wrongdoings, including by some officials, who he said, should be prosecuted, instead of being rewarded with government positions.

Referring to a past incident, he condemned the recent promotion of a policeman who allegedly opened fire on him in Bajaur. He said the official was promoted to senior superintendent of police (SSP) in Peshawar.

The PTI chief said he would brief Imran on the grievances aimed at challenging the status quo within the PTI KP leadership. He called for a decisive approach to help secure the release of the PTI founder.

Marwats' remarks follow reports of conflicts within the PTI, which emerged during the D-Chowk protests earlier this month and later over the vote for the 26th constitutional amendment, with some party members voting in favor of adjustments going against their party's policy.

Zain Qureshi, a day ago, resigned from the post of Deputy Parliamentary Leader of PTI in NA after receiving a show-cause notice for his severance from contact with the PTI leadership during the adoption of the amendment in the upper house and the lower house.

Marwat also engaged in tense verbal duels with other party leaders a few months earlier this year over what he called “disagreement with the party.”

The politician even faced termination of his basic party membership due to the violation of party discipline in August. He later apologized for his statements against PTI leaders.
