Imran to benefit from lifting of visit ban at Adiala prison

The ban on visiting prisoners at Adiala Prison has been lifted, allowing regular meetings with the family and legal representatives of PTI founder Imran Khan and general inmates.

The ban, initially imposed for security reasons, lasted three weeks, affecting more than 8,000 prisoners and detainees, who struggled to meet their families and obtain essential supplies.

Prison sources revealed that on October 4, the Punjab government issued a notification suspending prisoner visits due to increased security risks, with the ban initially expected to last until October 18.

However, on October 18, a subsequent notification extended the ban until October 21. The restriction was further extended by a fresh notification issued on October 22.

However, on Saturday, the Punjab government announced an end to the restrictions, allowing detainees to resume their regular meetings with their families and lawyers.

Sources said that during the ban, the PTI founder's legal proceedings, including the jail trial in the Toshakhana 2 case, as well as cases related to the May 9 events, were also stayed.

The cases continued in the respective courts, but no substantial developments occurred. Once the ban is lifted, the prison trial is expected to resume and regular meetings with the PTI founder's family and legal team are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Over the past three weeks, prison authorities, in coordination with other agencies, have strengthened security measures and conducted security drills to counter potential threats, prison sources revealed. The resumption of visits will also allow inmates to receive food, personal items and other necessities from their families.

It is pertinent to note that the restrictions affecting all detainees have raised concerns about the health of the ex-Prime Minister. PTI leaders threatened to stage a march on Islamabad, warning of an escalation of tensions if Imran's medical team and lawyers were denied access to the prison.

On Thursday, the PTI legal team approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which elicited a swift response. A judge ordered the government to facilitate a meeting between the incarcerated leader and his legal adviser, a directive that was quickly carried out later in the day, temporarily easing tensions.
