20 UK MPs urge UK government to press for release of Imran Khan, conditions for politically motivated prosecution | Pakistan News

A group of 20 cross-party British MPs have urged British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to plead with the Pakistani government for the release of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Adiala Prison, alleging that his prosecution appear politically motivated, Geo News TV reported.

MPs from both the Commons and Lords expressed concern in a letter about Khan's continued detention and added that he had been imprisoned in a manner deemed legally unfounded by the Joint Working Group on Detention arbitrary.

The letter said: “The continued detention of Mr. Khan poses a serious threat to democracy in Pakistan. There are fears that his fate could be determined by a military tribunal, which would constitute a worrying and illegal escalation. Amnesty International has identified a pattern of using the justice system to keep Imran Khan in detention and away from political engagement.

Additionally, the letter stated that Khan had not been given sufficient time or resources to prepare his defense and raised concerns that the numerous cases against Khan revealed misuse of the justice system in Pakistan to intimidate and targeting political opponents, thereby undermining the independence of the judiciary. The parliamentarians also took note of the measures taken against Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as well as the arrest of MPs and activists.

The Pakistan News Today report said the letter, initiated by Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson, was signed by MPs. It was sent at the request of Imran Khan's advisor on international affairs, Zulfi Bukhari.

Khan was arrested on August 5 last year after his conviction in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been imprisoned in various cases.
