China vows 'resolute countermeasures' after US arms sale to Taiwan for $2 billion
China vowed to take “resolute countermeasures” to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to US approval of nearly $2 billion arms sale to Taiwan .
This comes after the United States authorized the potential sale of radar and surface-to-air missile systems to Taiwan, worth an estimated $1.988 billion, aimed at boosting Taiwan's defense capabilities amid growing tensions with China in the Taiwan Strait.
The United States, although it does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, is required by law to provide the self-governing island nation with defense capabilities, a long-standing policy that has consistently drawn sharp criticism from the part of China.
The Pentagon on Friday announced the sale of a weapons package, which includes an advanced air defense missile system, marking its first planned deployment to Taiwan.
In a statement released on Saturday (October 26), China's Foreign Ministry expressed its strong condemnation and strong opposition to the sale, saying it had lodged “solemn representations” with the United States.
China urges the United States to immediately stop arming Taiwan and end its dangerous actions that undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, the statement added.
“China will resolutely take countermeasures and take all necessary measures to firmly defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” the ministry said. saidwithout mentioning the specific actions he intends to take.
In recent years, China has stepped up its military activities around Taiwan, including a new round of military exercises earlier this month.
