Trump's medical records controversy explained

As calls grow for Donald Trump to release his medical records, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris once again called out her opponent at a rally in Houston, Texas, on Friday. She highlighted the legal battle waged by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and other right-wing Texas leaders to access the private medical records of patients seeking out-of-state abortions.

Please see the irony, Harris said. On the one hand, Donald Trump won't let anyone see his medical records. I abandoned mine! And on the other hand, they want to get their hands on your medical records.

In the Harris report, physician Joshua R. Simmons said the vice president possessed the physical and mental resilience required to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.

Shortly after the Harris campaign released the vice president's medical report on October 12, more than 200 doctors and health care providers signed an open letter calling on Trump to release his.

The letter, dated Oct. 13 and organized by the group Doctors for Harris, argued that the former president should demonstrate similar transparency given his advanced age.

The American people deserve to have confidence in the mental and physical ability of their elected officials to do the work they elected them to do, they wrote. Trump should do everything possible to ensure transparency about his physical health and mental acuity, given his advanced age.

The issue has become more important to Trump since President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the July 21 presidential election and Trump, 78, faced Harris, then 59. years.

Although it is often traditional for presidential candidates to share their medical records, there is no law requiring Trump to release his records. According to Jeff Gulati, a political science professor at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, the more Trump refuses to do what Democrats ask of him, the more his base supports him.

It's really just a matter of public opinion now, and he's managed to not share it in two consecutive elections, Gulati told TIME. So, you know, there's no real incentive to release them now.

The most recent medical report shared publicly by Trump was featured in a November 20, 2023 Truth Social article, which included a screenshot of a letter from Dr. Bruce Aronwald, sharing few details but claiming that the former President was in excellent health.

In August, Trump said he would gladly share his medical records, but he has yet to do so. However, in October, when reporters approached him and asked about his medical records, Trump reportedly said the public already had enough information about his health.

Yes, my medical records. I have done five exams in the last four years. You have them all, he said. I took my health exams, I also took cognitive tests twice and passed them.

If Trump is elected in November, he will be the oldest U.S. president at the end of his term, which is a significant concern stemming from the doctor's open letter, which focused on the age and mental acuity of Republican candidates. It's the same scrutiny that was meted out to Trump's former adversary.

Meanwhile, Gulati says the Harris campaign must walk a fine line to not be seen as ageist when discussing Trump's medical records. This is obviously a delicate subject for Democrats, he believes. Age and health are obviously linked, but Harris can't really go all the way.

The day Harris released her medical records, the Trump campaign commented on Trump's own records in a press release.

President Trump voluntarily released updates from his personal physician, as well as detailed reports from Dr. Ronny Jackson who treated him after the first assassination attempt. All concluded that he was in perfect and excellent health to be commander in chief, said Steven Cheung, communications director for the Trump campaign.

Trump's medical team has remained tight-lipped about information about the former president's medical records after the attempt or the extent of his ear injury, which he sustained during the assassination attempt. from his July 13 campaign event in Pennsylvania.

Republican Rep. and physician Ronny Jackson of Texas wrote a signed letter released July 20, stating that the ear wound was caused by a gunshot and was beginning to granulate and heal properly. Jackson issued a follow-up letter on July 26, providing an update on Trump's ear injury.
