Sir Keir Starmer's popularity fell more significantly after his election victory than that of any other prime minister in modern history, a new poll has found.

After the July election, which saw Labor win a landslide majority of 174 seats, the prime minister's approval rating reached a peak of plus 11.

But in October, just days before Rachel Reeves' budget on Wednesday, a new poll from More in Common showed the prime minister's personal approval rating had fallen to -38, a net drop of 49 points.

His rating is now lower than that of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who now stands at -31 following a six-point increase since his election defeat.

Sir Tony Blair's popularity rating was plus 46 in August 1997, three months after he won a landslide election victory. At the time of the elections, his popularity rating was plus 60.

It wasn't until the summer of 2000 that his popularity dropped below zero.

Meanwhile, David Cameron's approval rating only turned negative in early 2011, after the formation of the coalition government in 2010.

It wasn't until April 2012 that his rating fell to around -30, according to the poll.

Boris Johnson started with an approval rating of -20, despite winning the 2019 election. But his rating improved to plus three in January 2020 and plus 14 the following March.

Luke Tryl, executive director of More in Common, described the collapse of Sir Keir's popularity as unprecedented compared to other modern prime ministers.

He added: Although they had a landslide victory, in terms of popularity they did not have as much room to maneuver as other new governments.

Mr. Tryl blamed the change in approval rates on two key issues, explaining: If you ask what people noticed, it was by far the decision on the winter fuel allocation and the early release of prisoners.

He also highlighted the dispute over gifts and donations.

The inquiry follows weeks of infighting after Labor won its historic victory, coupled with questions over gifts for the prime minister and senior ministers, and fears the government has lost control of its own diary.

Asked earlier this month whether he thought the government's first 100 days had been a success, the Prime Minister's official spokesperson replied: It is for the public to decide whether the first 100 days of government were a success.

The latest poll comes just days before the chancellor unveils her first budget, warning that expected tax rises will be just the start of painful measures to undo 14 years of damage from the Tories.

She promised to deliver economic growth, but also promised her party that there would be no further austerity.

The survey, of 1,012 adults, was carried out by More in Common between October 9 and 10.
